As concerns over eVisa revenue collection continue to make headlines, Securiport, the company responsible for managing Sierra Leone’s eVisa system, has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability while rejecting allegations of financial mismanagement. The company insists that all funds generated through its platform are properly accounted for and that any discrepancies in revenue collection should be addressed through improved oversight of government agencies handling visa fees.
Since 2020, Securiport has operated under strict compliance with Sierra Leonean laws, ensuring that visa processing remains transparent and efficient. The eVisa system was introduced to streamline visa issuance, enhance border security, and enable accurate financial reporting. However, enforcing the use of this system remains the responsibility of the government. Despite this, visa fees continue to be collected outside of the official platform by immigration officers, the National Revenue Authority (NRA), and Sierra Leone’s embassies abroad—raising concerns about accountability in government revenue collection.
According to Securiport, only about 20% of eVisa transactions are processed through its system, with all corresponding payments deposited into a jointly managed escrow account with the Government of Sierra Leone. The remaining 80% of visa fees, however, are reportedly collected by various government institutions. This, the company argues, makes it clear that any revenue shortfalls should be examined within the broader framework of government accountability rather than being attributed to Securiport.
As part of its commitment to transparency, Securiport has fully cooperated with authorities, maintaining an open-book approach to financial reporting. The company also agreed to lower its eVisa processing fees from $40 to $25 after the government assured that Sierra Leone Airport Security fees would be incorporated into airline ticket prices—a promise that has yet to be fulfilled.
Rather than assigning blame, Securiport believes the focus should be on enforcing accountability across all entities involved in visa revenue collection. Proper oversight, strengthened enforcement mechanisms, and a commitment to financial transparency are essential to ensuring that all funds due to the government are properly collected and utilized for national development.
Securiport remains committed to working with the Government of Sierra Leone to enhance border security and improve service delivery. However, it emphasizes that transparency and accountability must apply to all stakeholders, including public institutions responsible for managing government funds.
As this issue unfolds, The Independent News Sierra Leone will continue to monitor developments and advocate for full accountability in the management of public funds.
