The Power of the Media: A Call to Action for a Better Sierra Leone

By: Dr Doma

On Sunday, January 26th 2025, a video surfaced online highlighting a growing sanitation crisis at Savage Street, St. John Junction in Freetown.
The footage, produced by Sierra Leone’s emerging digital media platform, That’s Smytv, showcased piles of uncollected garbage littering the streets, disrupting pedestrians and vehicular movement.
The disturbing state of the area posed not only an environmental hazard but also a serious health risk to residents and commuters.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, George English, the CEO of That’s Smytv and a well-respected journalist, took swift action.
He sent the video directly to the Mayor of Freetown, urging immediate intervention.
Within hours, the Freetown City Council’s Sanitation Department responded, mobilizing a cleanup effort to restore the area.
The rapid resolution of this issue is a powerful testament to the impact of media in driving social change and accountability.

This incident highlights a crucial reality which the media is not just a tool for information and dissemination.
In contrast, it is an instrument of advocacy and transformation.

In an era where digital platforms have become the heartbeat of modern society, the power of responsible journalism cannot be overstated.
The ability of That’s Smytv to capture a pressing issue, amplify public concern, and prompt swift government action underscores the growing influence of new media in Sierra Leone.

For those who still question the effectiveness of the media in fostering positive change, this should serve as a wake-up call. The role of journalists and media houses extends beyond reporting; they serve as watchdogs, bridging the gap between the people and those in power.
It is through such proactive reporting that societal problems are exposed, addressed, and ultimately solved.

As Sierra Leone continues to embrace new media, platforms like That’s Smytv are proving to be invaluable in keeping citizens informed, engaged, and empowered.
Their commitment to delivering credible and authentic news has solidified their reputation as one of the most trusted voices in the country.

Let this be a reminder that the media is a force for good.
When wielded responsibly, it has the potential to inspire action, shape policies, and create a better future for all.
Freetown, and by extension, Sierra Leone, stands to benefit greatly from such bold and impactful journalism.

Kudos to George English and That’s Smytv for their unflinching dedication to truth and accountability.
Their intervention has not only restored cleanliness to a neglected part of the city but has also reinforced the undeniable power of the media in driving meaningful change.
